What is art?

Art is broadly recognized as an expression of creativity, where emotion, imagination and skill are used to create works that portray ideas that are intended to provoke, to be considered and to be appreciated.

Through using a diverse variety of skills, artists are able to create works - such as sculptures, sketches and paintings – that are designed as an expression that can have an effect on the wider world. The wide-ranging nature and application of art means that it is interlinked with many other subjects, including history, theology, and music. 

Art can be appreciated by everyone, regardless of the background, education or beliefs, and this is perhaps one of the main reasons why it is such a popular choice of degree course.

The importance or arts education in learning

A number of skills are learned by arts education:

• Creativity: In a word full of trained professionals and highly educated workers, creativity is one of the top skills that set someone apart from the pack. Of course, being qualified in your field is important, but having the ability to think imaginatively and bring fresh ideas to the table are essential to innovation and progress. Art education allows students to express themselves and think outside of the box.
• Collaboration: Working together for a common purpose teaches students that their contribution is important, which is perfect for the collaborative nature of the arts. By working collaboratively on a project, students learn to communicate more effectively, compromise when necessary, and work hard even if their role may seem small. All of these skills are vital in any work environment where teams come together for a common goal.
• Confidence: The arts create a safe space for students to explore their talents and build their confidence. Students who are shy in a normal classroom setting may gain the assurance to stand up and talk about their artwork. The sense of pride gained through a finished product encourages the students to keep trying and striving to accomplish more. With this confidence, they are more likely to take risks and step out of their comfort zone to try new things in other areas of their lives.
• Cultural Awareness & Empathy: The arts provide a unique platform to discuss many different cultures, socioeconomic levels, and current events. Through the arts, students have a place not only to learn about different cultures than their own, but also to ask questions and be more informed about the daily struggles and realities of people who may seem different. By learning about other people, students are able to develop their ability for empathy, essential in working with people from all walks of life, and realize that we have more in common than not.
• Critical Thinking: When students are making a work of art, the process includes conceptual and interpretational thinking that helps build their critical thinking skills including observation, reasoning, and problem-solving. During the creative process, students use logic and problem solving to strategize how to reach their intended outcome. Critical thinking skills are also in play when observing and analyzing famous works. This ability to think critically to solve problems in a unique way is key to the 21st century workplace.

After graduation

Art degrees differ vastly, so some degree courses are more vocational than others, but generally art graduates have a broad range of employment options once they finish their degree.

In fact, a significant proportion of art graduates go straight into full-time employment after their degrees. The most obvious art career requires a lot of determination and perseverance but for aspiring professional artists, an art degree would be a great path into the industry. Also, many illustrators and photographers hold art degrees of some kind and there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialized skills for specific careers.

The work of graphic designers, animators and printmakers is all rooted in the study of art too. Creativity is a skill that a lot of art graduates have in abundance and this asset is very useful in a wide variety of different industries. Many art graduates find themselves using their skills in media and marketing roles, and teaching is another way to use some of that creativity to inspire others.

About the faculty

The Faculty of Arts is the first and most renowned public higher education institution in Neyshabur County. Established in 1999, the faculty has continued, nearly two decades after its foundation, to serve as one of the most important academic centers responsible for arts education in eastern Iran.

The Faculty of Arts is proud to provide all its students with a comprehensive range of artistic and technical skills, as well as the theoretical knowledge required throughout their academic studies. Undergraduate education at the Faculty of Arts primarily involves participation in a variety of practical workshops, completion of artistic projects, participation in educational and cultural field trips, and, of course, theoretical coursework. The graduate programs offered by the faculty place greater emphasis on the theoretical foundations and academic studies of established disciplines. Students complete their studies by writing a thesis that represents an original and independent research project.

The beautiful and welcoming environment of the Faculty of Arts provides favorable conditions for the growth and development of students’ artistic talents. The faculty’s facilities include specialized art workshops, a well-equipped gallery, a beautiful amphitheater, a dining hall, an academic counseling center, and various continuing education courses offered in different fields of study.

In addition to providing students with high-quality and effective education through its various academic departments, the Faculty of Arts seeks, in accordance with the Strategic Development Plan of Neyshabur University, to provide artistic and cultural services at the national level. At the same time, the faculty plays an important role in the scientific and cultural development of the region, as well as in fostering and promoting the artistic talents and capabilities of the local community.

The Faculty of Arts is currently headed by Mr. Mahdi Darvishi.
